     Professor Martin Newcomb

Martin Newcomb obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1973 working under the direction of Warren Ford.  He was a post-doc in the late Nobel Laurette, Donald J. Cram's group at UCLA before joining the faculty at Texas A&M University in 1975.  In 1991, he moved to Wayne State University, and he and his group moved in 2001 to UIC where he is an LAS Distinguished Professor of Chemistry.

Newcomb's background is in physical organic chemistry, and his research interests are focused on radical chemistry in general.  His current research programs involve physical studies of radicals employing laser flash photolysis, mechanistic studies of oxidizing enzymes including cytochrome P450 and methane monooxygenase enzymes, and mechanisms of biological radical reactions involving coenzyme B12- and S-adenosylmethionine-dependent enzymes.

Newcomb has published more than 180 research papers and book chapters.  He received an Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society in 1993.  In 2000, he received the American Chemical Society's James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry.  He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
