Shown is a schematic of the low-flow push-pull perfusion system. Physiological saline is pumped and pull through the probe at 10-50 nL/min. The saline is mixed at the tip and bathes the tissue at the probe tip (see inset). Solution is collected into narrow bore Tygon tubing. (see inset) Sequential samples are collected by replacing with new Tygon tubing. This system has been used in various locations in both the rat brain and the rat eye. The types of molecules collected including nitrite and nitrate ions as well as large proteins.
