What we would like you to do is surf the web and pick 5 GOOD [in your estimation!]
CHEMISTRY web pages and one WebQuest—see info on WebQuest below ARISE
TOPICS. These can be web pages you have used with your classes.
If you do not know of any sites we have listed some links below. Some
sites may no longer be active or may have moved since I made up this
page in May. We would prefer you not listing a general chemistry site
like AP Central or an education site such as ACS or CHEMMATTERS.
Feel free to use the to find content topics you consider useful with
students. We would like you to classify the sites according to the 22
ARISE
CURRICULUM TOPICS that are listed below. Tell us why these sites are
good and how they could be used. Write a brief description and
list what you need to view each site- flash, java, etc. You will than email these 5 sites, 1
WebQuest site and brief info. on each to Wade at wfreeman@uic.edu
Wade will put these together on a cd and we will all get a copy
Here is are example:
http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/moviegallery/chemicalcrystals/coppersulfate/
ARISE #17 Water, Aqueous Solutions
A video of copper sulfate crystallization is observed under polarized
light illumination at a magnification of 10x in this video. Playing
time is 8.5 seconds. If you do not have microscopes to see the real
thing this video does a nice job in showing crystal growth. You will
need Real Player at least on a Mac.
http://www.mhhe.com/physsci/chemistry/essentialchemistry/flash/molvie1.swf
ARISE#17 Water, Aqueous Solutions
A nice animation showing the surface phenomenon of dissolving salt, see
the “the dissolution of NaCl in aqueous solution.” We can only wave our
hands about this in class here we see an animation show what happens on
a molecular level. You will need Flash to view this.

WEBQUEST
One of the web sites you review should be a chem WebQuest type.
WebQuests can engage students in on-line instruction in various science
topics. There is a broad range of what people seem to call
WebQuest, from what I call “worksheets on line” to real “quest”.
I will ask the people on Monday “if you have or know of real chemistry
WebQuest please let us know RIGHT NOW so we can share them with others
on Tuesday and Thursday.”
The following site shows integrating the internet into the curriculum
using WebQuests as learning activities. This is a nice easy site to
start with about WebQuest-- how to make them and use them:
http://pd.l2l.org/linktuts/inteweb.htm
Bernie Dodge, a professor of educational technology at San Diego State
University, developed the idea of WebQuest. The word "WebQuest" has
become a hot educational technology buzzword. To get much more detail
go to:
http://webquest.sdsu.edu/
How to build a website and WebQuest introducing a chemistry concepts:
http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~aak3453/EME5054/webquest.htm
A list of Chemistry WebQuest Links, some good some not so good:
http://www.jozie.net/JF/HS_Chem/Resources/webquest.htm
Below are some examples of WebQuest:
This is a simple internet activity called Atomic Fingerprints. A
nice example of an activity they could easily develop in one period:

I like this Spring Break Chemistry -A WebQuest
http://www-dept.usm.edu/~pt3/info/00-03/lesson_plans/plans/extra/013webquest.html
This is Periodic Table WebQuest by my former student teachers, the one
who took my place when I left 203, Mr. Martin. It ties in
classwork with the WebQuest:
http://www.ncusd203.org/north/depts/science/martin/periodictable_webquest.htm
Another periodic table WebQuest:
http://www.can-do.com/uci/lessons98/Periodic.html
A Nuclear Chemistry WebQuest with more questions than we would
require. There are all kinds of ways to make a WebQuest. This is
a simple one.
http://www.myschoolonline.com/page/0,1871,4797-149338-4-31088,00.html
This is PhysicsQuest to learn about the nature and properties of
waves. Really it is using one web site and trying to hold the
kids accountable for looking at it by asking a series of questions.
http://physicsquest.homestead.com/quest7.html
Investigates the basics of Atomic and Nuclear Physics/Chemistry to
learn about the different types of nuclear radiation, nuclear fission
and fusion and the principles behind nuclear bombs. I like this
site. You have chosen a path for the students to learn about a topic
and there are a series of questions to have them turn in a product to
see that they have actually visited the sites and perhaps learned
something.
