HISTORY OF SCIENCE TRIP TO EUROPE - 2002

Science History Tours will be visiting FRANCE AND SWITZERLAND from June 19 until July 3, 2002 - so come and join us.

Our custom-designed two-week trip will begin in Paris, where we will visit a number of the many fascinating science sites of the city - and enjoy the wonderful food and wine. Some free time will be built in to allow you to visit some of those other places you have dreamed of seeing.

Can you name these French Scientist?  Here is the list not in order of their pictures:

Becquerel Berthelot Berthollet Charles Curie
Gay-Lussac Lavoisier Paracelsus Pascal Pasteur

Our accommodations in Paris will be in the Latin Quarter on the left bank of the Seine, in a comfortable hotel right in the center of everything. Visits will include the Institut Pasteur, the Curie Museum, and the newly restored and re-designed Musee des Arts et Metiers, which has been collecting science objects since the French Revolution. It contains a wealth of objects of great importance, including the equipment from Lavisher’s laboratory. Also to be seen is a superb display of early measuring instruments, early Pascal calculating machines dating from the 17th century and the design model of the Statue of Liberty made by Bartholdi prior to his construction of "our" Statue.

Our journey through France will take us to the Burgundy region, where we will visit Pasteur's birthplace and also make a close study of the winemaking process including a visit to a vineyard. We will undoubtedly see some of the lovely chateaux of France and will then travel on to Geneva, to visit CERN, the European particle physics lab, where we have been promised a lecture by a very prominent astrophysicist whose home base is at Fermilab, here in Illinois.

Then we will travel on through the Swiss Alps to Berne and Zurich, where more very special visits will be arranged. As you will discover on this is a custom-designed tour, you will often be able to visit places to which you would not be able to gain entry on your own and meet local people who can give very special insights into the local culture or aspects of science history.

The cost of the trip is not yet determined, but as a guideline, this year's (2001) trip cost $2450 per person double occupancy. The price DOES NOT includes transatlantic airfare but DOES include all accommodations, transportation by luxury coach, all breakfasts, many other meals, all entrances fees, lectures and often a glass of wine. Roommate arrangements for those who will be traveling alone can usually be made. Non-scientist traveling companions will find much to interest them. Helpful advice to those who are inexperienced international travelers will be freely given.
