SCIENCE HISTORY TOUR Ireland - Summer 2001

ADVANCE NOTICE!!!

Be a part of our FOURTH TOUR . We will spend two weeks traveling throughout Ireland studying "IRELAND’S SCIENTIFIC HERITAGE". As you may have heard, Yvonne Twomey and Lee Marek have led very successful history of science tours to England, Ireland and Scotland. This is your next opportunity to participate in one these educational and highly enjoyable trips (we have received rave reviews!). Departure date will be in the second half of June and will be scheduled to fit in with the end of the school year. There will be visits of particular interest for all science teachers and their travelling companions, even non-scientists find our trips great fun!

A graduate course (3 semester hours credit) will be available at a very moderate extra cost. This course will be taught by Lee Marek.

Among many places to be visited in 2001 will be the Giants Causeway in the North, then in the West the eerie area of limestone pavement called the Burren, with its strange beauty and fascinating ecology. In the South there is magnificent Lismore Castle, birthplace of Robert Boyle, and now the Irish home of the Duke of Devonshire. Boyle’s Law assumes a whole new dimension when thought of in such surroundings! In Dublin, beautiful Trinity College, claiming to have the oldest Chemistry Department in the world, will be our base for a lecture program. Other Dublin attractions include the lovely Botanic Gardens, with newly restored Victorian wrought iron curvilinear greenhouses and magnificent collection of tropical plants. The trail of the eccentric Irish chemist Richard Kirwan, (a contemporary of Lavoisier) will be followed, from his birthplace in the old castle in the west (where we will stay) and the ruined castle near Galway City, which was his wife’s family home, to the Georgian house in Dublin where he lived for many years.

Science teachers of all kinds will enjoy the visits to science museums, universities, a school and not least, a distillery. Lectures on topics of special interest to us will be given at various venues by experts in scientific and other subjects. In addition, every opportunity will be taken to interact with local teachers, historians and other interesting people. Tour members will be able to participate in cultural and other events. Traveling companions are welcome. Non-scientists will find that there is a great deal to interest them. Persons traveling alone can be introduced if they would like to share a room to save single room supplements. Those wishing to extend the trip at either end can expect good advice on where to go and where to stay and all will be given advice on international travelling, whether you want it or not!
